HAIGHT & ASHBURY

  •
  • VASF is the first in a number of RVCA retail flagships to open around the globe. Launched in September 2007, the store, situated on the iconic corner of Haight and Ashbury in San Francisco, combines art, music, fashion and popular culture, offering an ideal platform to illustrate PM Tenore’s vision for the brand.

Acting as centre stage, VASF showcases the latest RVCA apparel collections as well as unique RVCA product collaborations with the likes of ANP Quarterly magazine, The Cobrasnake, JOYA Candles and Hamburger Eyes to name just a few. Also supporting like-minded brands by members of the RVCA family, VASF stocks brands such as Gato Heroi longboards, The Seventh Letter jewelry, and Caleb Siemon glassware.

Complementing the RVCA product collection is an assortment of books, magazines, DVD’s, and music currated by RVCA Advocate’s Family. Family is Los Angeles’ leading underground book and music emporium, founded by Australian born owners, David Kramer, Sammy Harkham and Tahli Harkham.

VASF is the ultimate platform to share RVCA’s culture with the brand’s fan base. Showcasing the talents of RVCA’s ANP (Artist Network Program), VASF collaborates with ANP members on a wide variety of projects - Artist Josh Lazcano aka AMAZE executed a piece on the façade of the building prior to it’s opening while skateboarder come artist and ANP Quarterly editor Ed Templeton and ANP Artist Clare Rojas completed the window displays for the store’s opening. VASF also showcases world renowned artist Adam Wallacavges’ unique chandeliers which hang throughout the store.

The culmination of RVCA culture is the gallery space in VASF. The gallery is a special platform for ANP artists. Curating four key art shows each year, VASF aims to become a new and exciting source of art culture for the local community, working alongside the ANP and local artists and personalities on special projects and events.

I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU

That’s right folks, everyone’s favorite country singer (or at least my favorite) is FINALLY back in the Bay Area, and man am I excited. The great Dolly Parton is touring her new album Backwoods Barbie at the Greek Theater in Berkeley on August 5th. I don’t know how, but there are still tickets left. Oh and If you haven’t checked out her music video for Better Get to Livin’ (featuring Amy Sedaris!!) you’ve really gotta You-Tube it, it’s life-affirming.

I leave you now with some pretty good dolly quotes:
-The way I see it, if you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain.
-I’m not offended by dumb blonde jokes because I know that I’m not dumb. I also know I’m not blonde.
-My husband said ’show me your boobs’ and I had to pull up my skirt … so it was time to get them done!
-You’d be surprised how much it costs to look this cheap!

MINTY FRESH

My aunt lives in Canada somewhere on this huge crazy horse ranch in the middle of the forest. That’s rad and all, but I think it left me with the impression that Canada is kinda boring aside from getting really into nature and animals. Now I knew that this stereotype was wrong and untrue. I heard stories about Vancouver and Montreal but, never having gone there myself, I guess I just needed some proof. And hallelujah I got it.
Mint Records has this cute little zine called Fresh Breath of Mint. Its got comics, reviews, interviews ‘n stuff like that. Luckily, I started pawing through one and researched a couple bands and friends and whaddayaknow Canada all of a sudden A+ in my book. They’ve got some good bands up there like The Gay and Hot Panda. AND there’s this weird, really annoying reporter Narduar that you’ve gotta You-Tube.

WHATCHA UP TO?

Remember that song Cristy Road by Green Day?
Those guys really would have benefited from a Nirvanna-type death early on, right? They were so GOOD and now they’re completely ridiculous. At least the Rolling Stones seem to have stopped writing songs and just play the same old stuff instead of trying to make good music forever. Let’s leave that to Tom Waits and David Byrne.
Anyway, Cristy C. Road keeps the spirit of punk alive in her comics, novels and drawings. It’s almost like that “Walk the streets alone” song never even happened. I mean, I can understand selling out to make some money but do you have to suck doing it?

We’ve got Cristy’s novel Indestructable, and her amazing book of postcards, Distance Makes the Heart Grow Sick hitting our consignment rack any moment now. Come through and check it out.

HOT BOD

This past Friday, I had an opportunity to do body painting with my pal Chris Brennan at SUDS, a skateboarding/art/subculture event put on in part by ANP’s Aaron Rose. Neither we, the models, or the people running the show had any idea what to expect, but it somehow turned out really well…

So after this, these girls get up on these podiums and displayed me and Chris’ handy work for everyone. It was definitely worthwhile.
Check out Chris Brennan’s photography at http://unaesthetic.net/ and I promise you wont be disappointed!
